Cocaine has been around for decades. While many people think the popular white substance is just an ‘80s drug, recent studies show it’s still popular amongst teens and young adults today.
It’s time to begin the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) National Drug Facts Week (January 27-February 2)! This provides the community with an opportunity to come together and learn accurate drug facts, raise awareness about youth drug prevention and make a difference in the community.
How can you get involved?
Have you signed up for one of our upcoming six-week Active Parenting Now or Active Parenting of Teens parent workshops yet? We have a variety of locations throughout Glendale, Phoenix and Scottsdale, and our Program Managers, Kim and Theresa, can’t wait to meet their new groups of parents!
Can you believe we’re already heading into the second full week of 2014? The kids are probably back to school, work schedules are busy and everyone’s ready for a great year ahead.
Happy 2014! With the start of a new year, it’s the perfect time to follow through on your goals to keep your family safe and healthy in 2014. DrugFreeAz.org can help give you the tools to accomplish that right away. We’re kicking off the year by tackling two tough, but common worries for parents: the drugs in our kids’ worlds and social networking safety.
Our team had a very special opportunity, courtesy of Councilmember Sammy Chavira and Glendale Police Chief Deborah Black, to appear on a recent episode of Glendale Today! Theresa and Kim were able to talk about how DrugFreeAz.org helps safeguard families against youth drug and alcohol use through our materials, resources and parent workshops.
It’s our hope that more families will become aware of the resources we are able to provide to the community.
What are your family’s holiday traditions? Perhaps they include checking out the many fun holiday events across the Valley. Or, if your family is like many of our staff members, you prefer to eat your way through the holidays by making tasty treats together to share with family and friends.
'Tis the season--is your family ready to make it a safe one?
As we head out to holiday parties, community celebrations and other seasonal fun, keeping our kids and teens safe when it comes to drug and alcohol offers is a concern that should be at the top of the list. The problem is that it's such a busy time of year.
Your kids face numerous decisions every day. Making their bed in the morning might be a house rule—but it’s ultimately still a choice! So is choosing fruit over a frosting-loaded donut for breakfast. But there are also the choices they make that take place at school, their job or while out with their friends that parents may not see.
As we head into this Thanksgiving week, take time to reflect on the good things our kids do each day and don’t minimize those healthy choices for being too small, expected of them or unseen by parents.
Alcohol is typically a routine part of holiday celebrations. Before you get ready to cut into the turkey and head out to holiday parties, talking to your kids about alcohol is an essential part of a safe holiday season.
Are any of these barriers stopping you from having an alcohol prevention conversation with your kids?
