As we head into the prom and graduation party season, we focus on ensuring our kids stay safe at these events and that they make healthy choices while they’re out, especially when it comes to drugs and alcohol. But just because they’ve arrived home safely doesn’t mean the coast is clear.

Although the school year is winding down, parents still have time to learn about preventing youth drug and alcohol in their family by checking out DrugFreeAz.org’s free prevention resources. The best part: Most of them are available online, so busy parents can check them out during a free moment between dropping the kids off at school or over lunch.

With the school year winding down, it’s time for end-of-year fun, including prom, graduation, graduation parties and spring break. With that comes the time for parents to step in and make sure safety is on the top of the list.
St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. With all of the festivities around green everything, including beer, this is a holiday that can send mixed signals to our kids. With nearly 70% of our Arizona high school seniors reporting alcohol use (2012 ACJC Survey Results), St. Patrick’s Day is a great opportunity for parents to discuss alcohol with their kids.

As we wrap up the month of love, we want to shout from the rooftops how much we love working with great parents, teachers and community members. From sharing tips about how to tackle the drug prevention conversation with your kids, to hearing about your family struggles in our workshops, our team is thankful for each moment we have with the families we meet.

Every month we continue to hear about various celebrities battling addiction. In July 2013, America was stunned when heroin claimed the life of “Glee” star Cory Monteith, who was just 32. Only a few weeks ago, the entertainment industry was shocked again when 46-year-old Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is believed to have overdosed on heroin, was found dead in his apartment.
February is the month of love and a time to think about those we love in our lives. That includes our families!
