Just Because They’re Back Home…

Doesn’t mean they’re safe. As we head into the prom and graduation party season, we focus on ensuring our kids stay safe at these events and that they make healthy choices while they’re out, especially when it comes to drugs and alcohol. But just because they’ve arrived home safely doesn’t mean the coast is clear.

After Your Teen Walks Through the Door:

  • Stay up: Be awake to greet them and acknowledge that they’re home.
  • Observe: While you’re talking to them, pay attention. Are they slurring their speech? Are their eyes dilated? Do they smell like alcohol or tobacco? Are they walking straight?
  • Intervene: If any of those questions raise red flags, make sure it’s safe for your child to go to sleep. Substance use and mixing substances can be deadly, so don’t risk not having your child wake up.

These tips don’t just apply to prom and graduation season—they’re great to use anytime your teen returns from being out with friends. Wishing all of our DrugFreeAz.org a safe and fun prom and graduation season full of great memories!
