Are you ready to see your kid absorbed in something other than their cell phone this summer? Encourage reading! Good literature can provide an escape from summer boredom. Additionally, they’ll improve their vocabulary and strengthen reading skills like comprehension, fluency and inference.

Finding a book to capture your teen’s attention shouldn’t be too difficult as there is an abundant amount of online resources to help the process and ensure they’ll find something to enjoy. These websites can take your kid’s interests, hobbies, moods and the kinds of books and authors they’ve previously enjoyed into account when suggesting a new read.

Here are a few websites to help you and your child choose a book:

1.       What Should I Read Next? – If you child has read a book that they really enjoyed and want to read something similar, then this simple and standard search engine is a good place to start. It gives a list of suggestions for the next reading adventure based on the selected book.

2.       Novelry – This is a more advanced search engine.  In addition to being able to search by author and titles for recommendations, you can also search by genre, keywords, subjects and themes. If you or your child has a specific hankering for a particular read, then this is the website to be able to search based on those specifics.

3.       Whichbook –This website suggests books completely based on your mood. Choose up to four sliders that range from happy to sad, larger than life to down to earth, short to long, and conventional to unusual, among many others. With millions of combinations, you’ll be able to find a book based on your need.

Is your kid already an avid reader? Consider going on cultural or educational outings to escape the summer humdrum. Many cool places in the area offer free and discounted admission. Check your local library and museums for events.
