Even though your teen is graduating and will soon enter adulthood with more independence, you still have a great deal of influence on the choices they make. Teens may face many temptations on graduation night, when the availability of alcohol and drugs may be even greater.
While graduation is a well-deserved celebration, it’s still important for parents to continue to explain that drinking alcohol or taking drugs is no way to celebrate.
We’ve all heard those gut-wrenching stories of teens suffering injuries or even dying during graduation festivities. This is why we must make sure there are guidelines and safety measures in place.
In addition to having a conversation about these dangers, make sure your child is equipped with the ability to not give in to peer pressure. You can ensure this by keeping an open line of communication with your teen and letting it be known that if they are put into a dangerous situation that they can always call you for help.
Make sure you understand which friends they’ll be hanging out with during the night as well as what plans they have scheduled. Establishing an agreed upon curfew and check-in time will help to guide them through a safe night.
