Main Dish: High school students look forward to their prom. Getting dressed up, going somewhere special for dinner and of course, the big dance and the after-hours celebration make the event especially memorable and fun.

While prom is a milestone event in a teen’s life, don’t let it turn dangerous by adding underage drinking to the evening.  You don’t have to make your teen come home right after the prom, but you can ensure their safety after hours by providing them alternatives to after-prom activities.

Here is a list of safe alternatives:

·         Some schools, teen centers or faith-based organizations often host an after-hours event.  Check with your school to see if something is happening in your neighborhood.

·         Why not suggest something like midnight bowling or miniature golf as an alternative?

·         Offer to host the after-hours party at your home. Create things like a game night or painting party to add a fun activity to the celebration.

·         Phoenix radio station KTAR has some helpful suggestions on keeping the party alcohol-free and safe.

Dessert: Make sure to have a talk with your teens about the fun they can have at their prom and the dangers of underage drinking.
