As parents we often feel frustrated when our kids give us those one word answers to our questions, “yeah, no, nothing.” So we’ve designed a fun way to get the ball rolling with our kitchen table conversation starters. Talking with our kids is so important. Click here to check out our conversation starters for elementary, middle and high school kids. They are color-coded based on the different age groups. Below are some tips on how to put the conversations starters to use.
Conversation starter tips:
1. Find the appropriate age category for your children. Cut the squares out and place in a bowl somewhere in the house. If you have different age groups in your home, choose different bowls so that the questions asked to the child are age appropriate.
2. Find time when you and your children either together or one on one can pick one of the squares from the bowl. This could be at meal time, just before bed time or you could grab a square for a discussion in the car on the way to school.
3. Everyone should participate – The question should be asked and then answered by you and your child.
4. Have fun! You can make squares of your own to add to the bowl. You could ask questions about where they would like to go on vacation or what kind of car they would buy and why.
Our children have wonderful things to say. Talking through issues with your children is often the best way to guide and teach them. You’ll be surprised how easy it becomes for your child to open up to you no matter what age they are.
