Prevention: what’s love got to do with it? Plenty! Especially with regard to tweens and teens. Dating and exposure to drugs and alcohol are some of the things parents worry about most during their kids’ adolescence. Let’s look at some of the facts.

A recent survey of American 8th, 10th and 12th graders shows that marijuana edibles are popular among teen marijuana users, especially in states that have legalized medical marijuana, such as Arizona. The 2014 Monitoring the Future Survey (MTF) measures drug use and attitudes among teens, and found that 40% of 12th graders who had used marijuana in the past year in medical marijuana states have consumed it in an edible form. Did you know that giving your teen sleep or anxiety medications to help them sleep or calm them down might be doing them more harm than good? A recent study by the University of Michigan shows that teens who are prescribed medications for sleep or anxiety are up to 12 times more likely to abuse those drugs than teens who are not prescribed medications.

“What were you thinking?” Most parents have said this to their tween or teen, or at least thought it, at one time or another. Sometimes our children can surprise us with impulsive or risky behaviors, and we might be thrown off guard by it. “I thought I taught him to know better than that,” we might worry to ourselves.

So if you have a teen, the likelihood of them being online and using social media is pretty high. Do you know what they are up to?
