As we continue raising awareness about medicine abuse throughout September, it’s important to remember that we not only safeguard the traditional prescription drugs that come to mind (Vicodin, Adderall, etc.), but that there’s also danger in the readily available over-the-counter medicines.
Cold medicines in particular often contain dextromethorphan, which can produce a hallucinogenic high when abused.
Here’s what parents need to know from this week’s local headlines:
-
Triple C: This one made local headlines this week after some teens at a local school experienced high blood pressure and elevated heart rate after abusing Coricidin, a common cold medicine. DrugFreeAz.org’s Shelly Mowrey spoke with AzFamily about the dangers.
-
Lean: Over-the-counter cold medicine can be mixed with other attractive ingredients (soda and candy) to create a drink with a hallucinogenic high. We’re thankful that both AzFamily and KTAR helped raise awareness through informative news pieces this week.
