A recent report finds that high school students are more likely to use marijuana than to binge drink. According to the report by ProjectKnow, the jurisdictions with the highest percentage of high school students who say they smoked marijuana in the past month are Washington, D.C., New Mexico, Washington state, Connecticut and Vermont. Nearly one-third of students in Washington, D.C. said they smoke marijuana.
ProjectKnow examined data from state agencies on high school students’ past month binge drinking or use of marijuana. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as consuming four or more alcoholic drinks for men and five or more alcoholic beverages for women within two hours. States with the highest rates of high school student binge drinking included West Virginia, Montana, New Jersey, Iowa and Arkansas. In only two states, Pennsylvania and Nevada, were both alcohol and marijuana used at nearly equal rates. ProjectKnow is a website that connects people to alcohol and drug addiction treatment resources.
