During last week’s blog, we discussed how to keep the flow of communication open with your child so they feel comfortable coming to you if they suspect or know that their friend is using drugs or alcohol. As a parent, how can you digest this information and approach the parents of your child’s friend?
Here are some tips and advice on how to take the appropriate steps when talking with another parent:
- Reach out with a phone call asking if you can come over and talk as you suspect that their child may be in trouble.
- If possible, provide specific examples of behavior that you have witnessed or observed.
- Be prepared for backlash as some parents will deny it. Stay calm and be understanding of their position, but gently push back that this is a serious concern.
- Come prepared with a list of drug use signs. This may help the parent recognize warning signs in their child’s behavior.
- Provide some resources for them, so they can act immediately to get help for their child.
Parents may be unaware of the signs, but they could be an indication of drug use and have serious consequences if not addressed right away.
