In the last week or so, we’ve seen heroin become a more prominent topic in the news. From “Glee” star Cory Monteith’s heroin and alcohol overdose, to large quantities of heroin found in Phoenix, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about it in the news—and so have your kids.
How can parents turn this into an opportunity for prevention?
- Educate Ourselves: By finding out the facts up front, you’ll be ready for a smoother conversation with your kids. DrugFreeAz.org’s heroin Drug Guide is a great resource. Plus, check out what DrugFreeAz.org’s CEO, Leslie Bloom, had to say about heroin on yesterday’s Fox 10 interview to know what to look for. (Hint: there’s a link between heroin and prescription drugs.)
- Talk to Our Kids: This can be a tough one to tackle, but by initiating these conversations, you’ll ensure your kids have accurate information and answers to their questions. Additionally, you’ll be aware about their concerns and have a proactive prevention plan in place.
