Holidays are a great time to be together as a family and have fun with friends. But it can get complicated when a holiday includes a strong association to celebrating with alcohol, especially when kids ask why.
With Cinco de Mayo just around the corner on Sunday, you might find yourself in that situation. Don’t worry: You can still have a fun and safe (and maybe even educational!) Cinco de Mayo celebration, while embracing the real origin of the holiday.
Here’s Two Ideas:
- Attend a Family-Friendly Celebration: The Phoenix community contains many rich opportunities to enjoy the real reason for celebrating Cinco de Mayo and appreciate the culture behind the holiday. Some family-friendly events that incorporate these elements include the Cinco de Mayo Festival & Chihuahua Races at Chandler Public Library and the Cinco de Mayo Festival in downtown Phoenix.
- Make Your Own Celebration: Take time as a family this weekend to discover more about the history of Cinco de Mayo at home. Whether it’s researching the origins (for the academics in your family) or doing a more visual activity, find what appeals to your family. It might even be through food! Plan a Sunday night feast that celebrates Mexico. If your family members are old enough, you could even delegate a dish to different people. (Bonus: A good way to teach meal-planning and get your kids involved in mealtime!)
¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
