While many of us associate Thanksgiving festivities with turkey, shopping and family time, did you know that some teens have something completely different on their minds? They might be gearing up for Blackout Wednesday. If you think Blackout Wednesday has anything to do with the traditional holiday festivities, think again. It’s considered one of the biggest “drinking holiday” events of the year for teens.

study by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) shows an increase in drunk driving deaths on the eve of Thanksgiving.  Even for teens who may not be behind the wheel, Blackout Wednesday has become a time to binge drink and engage in risky behavior. There are, however, steps that parents can take to reduce the liklihood of their kids drinking.

What can you parents do?

Talk early and often about the dangers of substance abuse with your children. Even if you don’t suspect your child will participate in Blackout Wednesday, it’s important to set your expectations and communicate those rules and guidelines to your teen.

Alcohol remains the most commonly used substance among youth. Although alcohol use is down among Arizona teenagers, according to the 2014 Arizona Youth Survey, 46 percent of students said they had tried alcohol in their lifetime. About 24 percent said they consumed alcohol in the past 30 days.

As we approach Blackout Wednesday, make sure to focus on your teen’s behavior. Having a problem-prevention talk with your teen will ensure they are prepared for peer pressure situations. Help your teen understand the positive and healthy ways to celebrate this Thanksgiving holiday.
