The Arizona Youth Survey, conducted biannually by the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission, provides a great amount of data on a number of youth issues in Arizona, including substance abuse. Because the results of the survey are made public, communities across the state can take a look at which substances are most prevalent in their counties and at the state level as well. What we do with that data is up to us. First, it is important to look between the lines of data to figure out what is really happening among our youth relating to substance abuse.
Taking a look at one county’s survey results, we see that both life-time and past 30-day use of alcohol by 8th graders are higher than the state averages. However, when it comes to results for 10th and 12th grade students, we see that they closely align with the state average. These types of trends can be seen across different counties, age groups, and substances. But what does this mean and what do we do with this information?
Take Action
· We can start by talking with our kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol early and often.
· We can also advocate for substance abuse prevention programs in our schools so that all age groups and communities get the information and resources needed to protect kids.
· Supporting local prevention efforts is also a great way to see what is happening in your community and find out how you can make an impact. Check out our Community Alliance Program which represents communities across the state.
